I usually say this blog is mostly about archery. I’ve decided to put in a monthly piece, on the first of every month, about something I’ve been a fan of for many decades longer – music. Particularly new music, things mostly released in the last few months or so. I’m going to try not to stick to any particular genre or style. That’s it. Hope you find something you like. Back to the archery soon.
1. Bondax – Giving It All
Don’t know a lot about this lot apart from the fact they are from London, they’re still teenagers (sob), and they deliver a brand of squelchy pop with nods to current deep house and bass music, but a bit more summery.
2. Julianna Barwick – The Magic Place
Saw her play a month or so ago at the Purcell Room in London; extraordinary, ethereal constructions made using just a (great) voice and a delay pedal or two. Was excellent.
3. The Secret History – God Save The Runaways
Saw this lot in London last week; pop music aiming for the stars. The grand sweep. The big gesture. Nods to everything from Pulp to Depeche Mode, but really just themselves.
4. John Grant – Blackbelt
American “singer-songwriter” with an darkly good new album this year.
5. Jonas LR – Cockiness
Very much part of the deep house revival presently almost-sweeping the UK’s dance music scene, this seems to have a bit more verve and style and gleam about it than a lot of the other records I’ve been hearing.
6. Aluna George – You Know You Like It
Think this has been out before, but it’s awesome; broody bass music with a cracking chorus and a woozy atmosphere.
7. Elvis Crespo – Suavamente
Mexican trap music. As good a Mexican trap record as you’re ever gonna get (I suppose).
8. Gaz Coombes – One Of These Days
Former Supergrass frontman in epic Richard Hawley / Scott Walker mode. I thought it was beautiful.
